As another election year approaches, civil society groups, once again beef up on voters’ registration, education and monitoring campaign. Bantay Eleksyon, an initiative of various electoral reform advocates which started in 2007, is aiming to foster fair, free, and credible elections through monitoring of national and local elections and the performance of the Commission on Elections. BE’s campaign was re-launched in several areas across the country last April 2009.
In 2007, Bantay Eleksyon was able to gather almost 2000 civilian reporters and more than 160 organized monitoring teams during the election period. With barely one year left to prepare for the 2010 polls, BE has begun going around the country giving trainings to Civil Society Leaders, students and young people on election monitoring and voters education implementation.
